4 habits that can affect the quality of breast milk

Every woman's journey to be a mother is very different, but one of the first worries in every woman's motherhood is how to raise her baby well.

Breastfeeding is a healthy method of feeding your baby that benefits both the baby and the mother. Breast milk contains hormones and disease-fighting cells called antibodies that help protect babies from germs and disease. At the same time, breast milk also provides balanced and essential nutrients for the baby's body. Breast milk is easy to digest, and it can help children fight diseases by boosting the immune system.

Experts recommend that mothers should breastfeed exclusively until their baby is six months old. You should avoid giving your baby extra cereals as this may prevent your baby from drinking much breastmilk. You can gradually offer other foods to your baby by about six months of age.

Here are some of the habits that can affect breast milk to keep in mind:

1. Smoking cigarettes

If you smoke, quit as soon as possible. If you can't quit, be sure to always smoke away from your baby and change your clothes after each smoke to keep your baby away from chemicals that get on their clothes. Ask your doctor or assisted nurse to quit smoking.

2. Drink alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol in large amounts. If you do, wait two hours or more before breast-feeding. You can also pump out milk before you drink alcohol and feed your baby afterwards.

3. Medicines and stimulants

Stimulants like cocaine, heroin and PCP can harm a baby and are completely illegal. Some of the side effects reported in the nursing infant using these stimulants include seizures, vomiting, anorexia, and tremor.

Almost all of the medicines you take are passed into your milk. Some do not work for the baby and can be used while breastfeeding, but some can cause serious side effects in a nursing baby. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you are taking before breast-feeding. These include prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, herbs, and supplements. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks of breastfeeding and taking medications to help you make the best decision.

4. Birth control pills

You still need to avoid pregnancy if you are breast-feeding. Breastfeeding is not a sure way to prevent pregnancy, although it can delay ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Consult with your doctor or nurse to choose the best birth control method.
