When should mothers not breastfeed?

Breast milk is a perfect and valuable source of nutrition for your baby. But there are many different reasons for you and your baby that you may not be breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is one of the fun and sacred things any mother can experience and a desire to be done to ensure healthy baby development. But if you have one of the following factors, you may not be breast-feeding your baby.

Factors that interfere with breastfeeding

If you have one of the following factors, you should not breast-feed. The most common factors that prevent or interfere with your breastfeeding include:

Severe debilitating illnesses (such as heart / kidney disease or severe anemia), or being too underweight (your body needs to store enough fat to make milk). However, some women can still manage to overcome these obstacles and breastfeed

Infection, such as tuberculosis that is left untreated (however two weeks after treatment the mother should be able to breastfeed normally); have  AIDS  or  HIV , as it can be passed through body fluids, including breast milk. You can still breastfeed if you have hepatitis A virus  infection  (after your baby has been given gamma globulin) or  hepatitis B  (after your baby has been given gamma globulin and vaccinated against hepatitis B).

When you have to take them regularly and these drugs can pass into milk and harm your baby, such as: anti-cancer drugs, some thyroid-protecting drugs or blood pressure lowering drugs, lithium, sleeping pills or sedatives. You should not take medications such as penicillin. Always consult your doctor before starting a new medicine while you are breast-feeding;

When you use potentially addictive substances (drugs, marijuana, heroin), sedatives, stimulants, sleeping pills or more, or abuse alcohol (however sometimes you drink a little. still acceptable) ...

You are exposed to hazardous chemicals in the workplace. In order to be able to determine if you have been exposed to harmful substances present in the workplace, see your doctor to find out, order detailed tests and do detailed assessments.

Your mammary glands are not fully developed (note this disease has no relation to the size of the breast) or damage to the nipple's induction nerves (because of injury or surgery). In some cases, you can breastfeed under the careful supervision of experts to make sure your baby is growing healthy while breastfeeding. If you have had cancer surgery on one breast, ask your doctor if you can breastfeed.

Factors from infants

Some babies may have diseases that make breastfeeding difficult. These diseases include:

Metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria (PKU) or  lactose intolerance  make the baby unable to digest both breast milk and cow's milk. Children with PKU need to be treated with nutritional supplements that do not contain phenylalanine. You can mix formula feeding with breastfeeding, as long as the blood concentration is carefully monitored and the amount of breast milk is controlled. In the case of lactose intolerance (which is extremely rare in infants), breastmilk can be mixed with lactase to make it easier for the baby to digest.

Baby with cleft lip or cleft palate. In some cases, especially if the lips are only open, the baby can still breastfeed using a special mouth device. Consult a registered dietitian if you decide to breastfeed. You can also express and feed your baby with a spoon until your baby has surgery (usually in the first few weeks after birth) and start to feed your baby after that.

If you can't or don't want to breastfeed, make sure the formula you buy can meet your baby's nutritional needs. Millions of healthy and happy babies have been raised with formula. Therefore, you should not worry if you are in a situation where breastfeeding should not cause your baby to bottle feed.
