The holding-up and down-sleep practice method is a fairly gentle method of practicing sleep. This is a tear-free method of sleep training that requires a lot of patience. Have you ever heard of this method? Let's find out a little bit with aFamilyToday Health.
Holding up and putting down (PUPD) is one of Tracy Hogg's famous book Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Like the name of the method, holding up and down means that if your baby cries while sleeping in a crib, pick up and comfort the baby until the baby is sleepy. Then you put the baby back in the crib. If your baby continues to cry, repeat this until the baby is asleep.
This method requires patience and is not suitable for all children and parents. Some babies, when this method of holding up and down, often feel excited rather than relaxed. And as a result, it is more difficult for the baby to sleep than before.
You can start doing this when your baby is three months old. Before you get started, you must take the following 3 important steps:
1. Maintain bedtime
Based on your baby's biological clock, watch for signs that your baby is sleepy and when he shows these signs. From there, you should practice for your baby a few simple sleeping habits. It's important to maintain a certain time of bedtime so your baby knows what's going to happen.
2. Develop good sleep habits
The construction of sleeping habits will be a sign to recognize the current baby at night and it is time to sleep. Lullaby, turn off the lights before going to bed ... These habits can help your baby know that he is going to sleep.
3. Put your baby in bed when he is sleepy, not when he falls asleep.
When you're ready, do the following 7 steps:
1. When you put your baby down, if your baby cries, gently place your hand on your chest and reassure your baby with whispers that you always use to calm your baby to sleep, eg “go to sleep”.
2. If the baby still cries, pick up and repeat the whispers.
3. When the baby stops crying but is still awake, put the baby back in the crib. If the baby cries again, hold him up again.
4. Repeat this process until you see signs of stabilization (eg your baby's cries gradually fade).
5. When you feel the baby has calmed down, stop holding the baby, put the baby in the crib. Put your hand on the baby's chest and say the whispers again.
6. Exit the room.
7. If your baby cries again, repeat the process several times until the baby sleeps.
The method of holding up and falling asleep is suitable for children 3 months old. However, if the baby gets older, some adjustments are needed.
If your baby is four months old, take the following steps:
Only hold babies for up to five minutes. If your baby is still not showing signs of holding back, put him down and lift him up again if he cries.
Between each pick up and down, gently pat your baby while in the crib.
If the baby is still crying, pick it up again.
Put your baby down as soon as he stops crying or when you've held him for 5 minutes.
This method needs to be adjusted as the baby gets older:
From 4 - 6 months, you must watch for signs of drowsiness. If your baby bends his back, this could be a sign that he or she wants to lie down even though he is still crying.
If you hold your baby for too long, your baby will associate crying with holding. Say “let mum hold you” or “let mum put the baby down” every time you perform the action.
You should only hold the baby for up to 3 minutes, then put the baby down, even if the baby is still crying. You can repeat this process.
Instead, hold out your hand for a moment to see what your baby reacts to. For example, extend your hand and say "let mum hold". If your baby comes closer, lift it up.
As you lift your baby, whisper familiar noises. Do not look at or rock your baby. Then put the baby down.
When your baby starts to show signs of holding off, continue to whisper. You can also put your hand on the baby's chest or back. However, some babies do not like it. Therefore, you should watch your baby. If your baby doesn't like it, don't do it.
From this stage, the baby is more likely to stop crying when lying in a crib. So unless your baby is really uncomfortable, don't pick him up.
If your baby stands up or lifts himself, gently put it down.
Your baby will begin to understand what you say, eg “it's time to sleep”.
At this age, you can combine the method of holding up and gradual retreat to practice sleep for your baby.
It may take a few minutes to a few hours for your baby to stop. The number of times the baby is picked up is less and less as the baby gets used to it. You can count the number of picks to keep track of your baby's sleeping progress.
You should see an improvement after a few days of using this method, on average about 5 days.
