How to treat when a baby has flat head after birth

The flat head (flat head, flat head, distorted head) in an infant is probably one of the biggest worries of mothers with their babies. So how to determine the cause and treatment of flatheaded children? Let aFamilyToday Health find out the answer.

What is a flat head?

When a baby's head is flattened on one side or back, it is called flat head. Parents should not be too concerned because flathead does not cause serious health problems and will go away on its own over time. Flatheads are more common in babies younger than 5 months old, because their skull bones are now very soft and unstable. As the baby grows, the baby's bones will gradually harden and develop.

What causes flathead in babies?

One of the most common causes of flathead is due to a mild, prolonged pressure on one side of the baby's skull. This causes the skull to change shape and no longer be symmetrical.

Flat heads may appear before or after the baby is born. Your baby may have a flat head because of the lack of space in the uterus. This can happen in the following cases:

Babies born with buttocks;

Baby twins , triplets or more;

Baby is a baby. At birth, the baby's head usually falls before labor begins, so it will be more pressured along the way and the mother usually tries to push harder;

Lack of amniotic fluid in the mother's womb.

What should I do when I have a flat head?

You can help return your baby's head to normal shape by repositioning when he sleeps, feeds, or plays. When the baby lows, you put the baby on his back. Make sure that the normal round head comes in contact with the mattress and refrains from contact with the lying surface.

The second way is to put the baby on the bed, lie down in one direction one night and change the other the next night. Babies will usually like to face in the same direction, so they will rotate the sides of their head for two consecutive nights.

Also, change the scenery in the area where the baby is lying often in different directions so that the baby does not focus on just one direction.

When your baby wakes up, you can take steps to encourage your baby to move his head around by changing the position of toys and other interesting things that make your baby enjoy looking from one side of the bed to the other.

As your baby's neck muscles get stronger, try giving him a tummy for 1-2 minutes at the start. When your baby is three months old, you should be able to play with your baby. Gradually, you should increase the amount of time your baby is lying on his stomach at least every 30 minutes, three times a day.

You should reduce the amount of time your baby spends in an infant stroller or car seat as these keep your baby's head in one position. You can change the shoulder or hip when holding the baby and make sure the baby's head is always not in the same position as the mother feeds.

Usually, reshaping the baby's head in the ways above will resolve the flatulence without further treatment. However, if you have tried to correct it in 6-8 weeks without any improvement then see your doctor for advice or other treatment.
