When they are born, boys will have a piece of skin that covers the head of the penis called the foreskin. Circumcision is a procedure that removes the skin covering the baby's penis.
Your baby needs to be healthy and in stable health at birth to have this procedure. If you decide to circumcise your baby, you should consult with your doctor about the procedure and help you schedule a hospital or clinic visit. Usually, circumcision is performed before you and your baby leave the hospital. Sometimes, circumcision can be done outpatient. The procedures are done in about 10 minutes.
Usually, the baby will lie on the bed with the arms and legs held back to prevent the baby from struggling. After disinfecting the penis and surrounding area, the doctor will inject an anesthetic into the penis. A special clip or plastic ring is attached to the penis and the doctor will remove the foreskin. Ointments, such as lubricants, are also used to protect the penis from sticking to the diaper.
If the baby throws on, then the anesthetic is no longer effective, you should hold him gently - careful to avoid putting pressure on the penis. It usually takes about 7 to 10 days for the penis to heal.
Studies have shown that a child after circumcision has a lower risk of developing the following diseases:
Foreskin infection;
Urinary tract infections;
Penile cancer;
Sexually transmitted diseases;
Phimosis.
Risks when performing: Like any other procedure, circumcision can cause complications. However, complications are rare and often mild if they do. In some serious cases, your baby may become infected and bleed.
Penis injury: Very rare, the foreskin can be cut too short or too long, or it may not heal properly. These complications may cause your baby to need to re-cut the foreskin or have a penis repair.
Change the sensitivity of the penis: Some people believe that circumcision can reduce the sensitivity of the penis tip, decrease sexual pleasure in the later life of a baby. However, this has yet to be proven true.
Fear of pain: Some parents choose not to have their child circumcised because they are concerned that their baby will be in pain. However, the doctor will give the baby anesthesia and the baby will only have a little pain when the anesthetic wears off.
Head protection: When circumcised, the tip of the penis can become irritated and make the tip of the urethra too small. This can lead to problems with urination, and the doctor may need surgery to treat these problems.
