Children vomiting or vomiting: phenomenon more dangerous?

Taking care of a newborn requires a lot of experience, but sometimes many parents who have taken care of their young child still feel confused. Certainly, when taking care of your baby, you used to be confused and somewhat frustrated because the baby was constantly spitting milk or food. Initially, the baby only vomited a couple of times, but later, the frequency of vomiting increased, even vomiting every time he ate.

Most vomiting-prone babies grow very well and have no difficulty breathing at all. If your baby is in the above situation, you do not need to worry too much and do not need to take him to treatment. But when your baby has any other special signs, do not be subjective but take him to the doctor!

Why is the baby vomiting?

When your baby sucks, the milk moves back to the back of the throat and down a muscular tube called the esophagus before it reaches the stomach. There is a muscle ring connecting the stomach and esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter. When that muscle ring opens, milk flows into the stomach, then the muscle ring closes. If that muscle ring does not close tightly enough, the milk will flow back upwards, also known as reflux, causing the baby to vomit.

Infants are more prone to reflux because their stomach is small - about the size of a fist or a golf ball - so it's easy to get full. Likewise, the lower esophageal sphincter is also immature to work as well as it does in adults. It takes 4-5 months for your baby to get rid of reflux. By the time your baby starts eating harder foods, the reflux symptoms will be more frequent. But don't equate reflux with vomiting! Reflux usually occurs when a baby burp.

What should mothers do to prevent vomiting in children?

Vomiting is a common phenomenon in children, if it lasts long, it can affect the normal development of children. Some of the following measures to help your baby reduce vomiting, which mothers should refer to:

Baby should eat in a standing position;

Feed your baby smaller amounts and more often, burp every 3-5 minutes;

Avoid pressing on the baby's stomach when you patted the baby;

Avoid moving your baby a lot during and after eating.

Distinguish vomiting and vomiting in young children

Vomiting is the expulsion of food from the stomach and intestines that requires more force and makes the baby more painful to vomit. Vomiting can dehydrate your baby, so every time your baby shows signs of vomiting, you need to check if your baby is dehydrated.

There are strategies to help your baby reduce symptoms of vomiting such as:

You should let your baby drink water, sports drinks or broths, avoid juices and soft drinks;

You can feed your baby depending on how he is eating, but only offer foods that are easy to digest and bland like cookies or simple bread. If your baby is vomiting a lot and for a long time, you need to find vegetables and proteins that are easy to digest to ensure nutrition for your baby;

You should avoid giving your baby indigestible fried foods;

You should avoid giving your baby too much sweets;

During the day, you should feed your baby into several small meals and eat slowly;

After eating, you should let your baby rest, lying head position slightly higher than body.

In addition, parents can take the following steps to monitor the baby's condition when the baby is vomiting:

If your baby shows signs of dehydration: dry lips, crying without tears, dry diapers, dark urine, dimples, you should take your baby to the doctor immediately;

If your baby does not vomit 3 to 4 hours later, you should give him rehydration water;

About 8 hours later, if the baby no longer vomiting, you can breastfeed your baby, or formula can be supplemented if needed;

For older babies who can eat solids, feed them as usual and eat slowly, avoiding spicy and fried foods;

After 24 hours, when your baby no longer vomits, you can now feed your baby as usual.

These simple steps above can help your baby feel better and don't need a doctor. But if parents notice any of the following danger signs in your baby, get them to the hospital immediately:

Vomiting often;

Strong vomiting;

Vomiting more than 1 or 2 tablespoons of milk;

Discharge of a brown, red, or green discharge;

No weight gain;

Babies urinate less often than usual;

Exhausted and tired;

Fever higher than 39oC;

Vomiting of blood or bloody stools;

Vomiting or crying without tears;

Diarrhea more than 1 time a day.
