Teaching children to be independent like the Japanese way

It is a very common image to see a small child carrying her own things, going to the supermarket with her mother or walking on the street. Children in Japan are taught to be independent from a very young age.

Whether at home or at school, parents encourage their children to do their own things. Japanese children wear their own clothes , shoes, and bags . Japanese children change a lot when they go to school. When they first arrive, they have to take off their shoes and change them with slippers. If there is a PE lesson, your child must also change clothes and shoes during recess. When joining clubs, children change clothes to suit the content of clubs that they join.

Studying time in Japan usually lasts from morning to afternoon. The baby's mother often prepared meals  to carry and feed themselves in the lunch break. It is very common for a small child to eat and tidy up his own meals in Japan. Even a toddler in elementary school was able to cook.

Start with simple things, like getting your child dressed for himself. Teach your baby to distinguish the front, left and right sides, and teach him how to dress. The baby may take a lot of time during the first few times. But mothers should be patient, encourage or praise the baby instead of doing it for the baby. After a few times, the baby can completely dress himself up quickly.

Start with simple things and gradually increase the difficulty as your baby gets used to. Like when your baby gets used to storing toys after playing, moms can encourage babies to clean their own room or help mom with simple chores. The mother should also pay attention not to scold the baby when the baby cannot do it on her own. Scolding children only makes them lose confidence in their abilities. Instead, the mother can gently show her how to do it again.
