Newborn girls menstruate right after birth, is this strange? Then there is a baby also possessing massive breasts and swollen genitals? What is this?
Most newborn girls have “a little period” at some point during the first two months. Why did this happen? Dr. Natalie Epton, a pediatrician and neonatology specialist at the International Pediatric Clinic, Singapore has her candid opinions on this matter.
When the baby is in the womb, is exposed to the mother's estrogen. After birth , hormones in a baby's body rapidly decline, causing a "withdrawal bleeding" similar to a small period in the menstrual cycle in adult women. This is completely harmless and normal.
This occurs within the first one to two weeks, most common on a girl's fifth day. You may notice a white vagina right before the bleeding.
But if your baby has persistent or excessive vaginal bleeding, it's important to ask your doctor to see you again as this could be a sign of an underlying bleeding disorder.
Due to the exposure to estrogen from the womb, it is normal for a baby girl to have early menstruation
Baby has massive breasts
Maternal estrogen exposure can also cause breast enlargement in both male and female infants , which resolves on its own. Note that if there is a red spot or spot around the baby's chest and there is a fever, you need to take the baby to check because it can be a sign of a serious health problem. .
Swollen genitals
Some boys have larger genitals / testicles than normal babies (and a few can happen in girls too). The reason is due to the effect of hormones during pregnancy and normally it will quickly be excreted through the urinary tract within a few days.
