How does green tea increase fertility?

Green tea has a lot of health benefits including its ability to increase fertility. This article will help you understand more about how green tea increases fertility.

As you all know, tea has many great uses for health. Besides the effect of antioxidants, protecting the body's cells from damage that can lead to cancer and other diseases, many people believe that tea also increases the likelihood of conception for women. Is this believable? Please refer to the following article to understand better!

Distinguish the types of teas

There are 3 main types of tea including green tea, black tea and oolong tea. These three teas are all derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. The difference between these teas is in how they are prepared. Green tea is made from non-fermented tea leaves, oolong tea is partially fermented, and black tea is fully fermented.

The more tea leaves are fermented, the lower the polyphenol content and the higher the caffeine content. Green tea is made from non-fermented leaves and is said to contain the highest concentration of polyphenols, chemicals that act as powerful antioxidants. Black tea has 2–3 times the caffeine content of green tea.

Polyphenols contained in tea are classified as catechins. Green tea contains 6 main catechin compounds: catechin, gallaogatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate and galligglutapigamide (also known as EGCG). EGCG is considered to be the most active ingredient in green tea and is the best proven of all the green tea polyphenols. Green tea also contains alkaloids including caffeine, theobromine and theophylline. Alkaloids are addictive in green tea.

Green tea contains about 30% to 40% polyphenols while black tea contains only 3% to 10% polyphenols. Green and black teas are derived from the same plant and processed differently. The difference in processing results in more polyphenols being broken down in the black teas. So green tea appears to have more benefits, but black tea still retains some of the benefits.

Why does green tea increase fertility for women?

According to some doctors, drinking green tea can help you lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease , cancer, even increase the fertility of women.

Green tea's healthy effects are mainly attributed to polyphenols, active ingredients with powerful antioxidant properties. In fact, the antioxidant effect of polyphenols is even greater than that of vitamin C. The polyphenols in green tea give tea a bitter taste. These polyphenols have been linked with anti-cancer and anti-heart disease effects.

In the past, it was recommended that women having difficulty conceiving should limit the amount of caffeine their body can absorb. However, recent studies show that green tea can increase fertility. The researchers found that the women who drank more than half a cup of green tea daily doubled their fertility. However, there was no association between conception and caffeinated beverages. Hence, the researchers concluded that an ingredient in non-caffeinated tea may have fertility effects.

This conclusion contradicts previous findings that caffeine can inhibit fertility. Researchers suggest that the result may be a link of drinking green tea with a healthy lifestyle like smoking less, eating less fat and exercising regularly that may increase fertility.

What types of green tea are available in the market?

Most green tea products sold are dried leaf tea. There are also extracts of fresh tea leaves and buds. A cup of green tea contains about 50 to 150 mg polyphenols. Caffeinated green tea products contain concentrated polyphenols (60% to 89% of total polyphenols). Filter bags and liquid solutions are also available.

Drinking a moderate amount of green tea each day will help your health. Hope this article has provided you with lots of useful information.
