The following article of aFamilyToday Health will answer you this question.

High intensity sports exercise is the reason why women are difficult to get pregnant

A study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has demonstrated that the body may not have enough energy to support both intense exercise and pregnancy.

Are you a professional female athlete or simply someone who likes to exercise with high intensity, challenge and in the process of trying to conceive? However, a long time has passed and your husband and wife have not yet received a positive signal.

In this case, if you want to conceive, reduce the intensity of exercise, according to new research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. About 7% of Norwegian women have infertility problems. They cannot get pregnant during the first year of trying to conceive, however after that they can get pregnant normally.

There are many reasons why a couple is infertile , this causes related to health and lifestyle. The known risk factors include: smoking, stress and alcohol, being too thin or being overweight ...

However, we do know that female athletes with too high a intensity of exercise experience more fertility problems than other women. But don't we know yet that excessive physical activity can have negative effects on the fertility of normal women?

Researchers at NTNU got the correct answer to this question through a study involving nearly 3,000 women. Research has found that exercising too often and regularly seems to decrease fertility in many young women. But fortunately this only happens when they train too hard.

Two groups of people are at risk of having difficulty getting pregnant

High intensity exercise makes it difficult for women to get pregnant

This research is based on data from the Nord-Trøndelag University health survey which took place from 1984–1986 and a follow-up survey that lasted for two years (1995–1997). All of the women participating were of childbearing age, healthy, and no one had a history of fertility problems.

In the first survey, participants answered questions about the frequency, duration, and intensity of their physical activity. Ten years later, they continued to answer questions about pregnancy and childbirth. The NTNU researchers also recorded many other information that could be of significance for the study.

Dr Sigridur Lara Gudmundsdottir, a female member of the NTNU Human Motion Science Program, said: “Out of all these women, we have found two groups of people at a higher risk of infertility. . It was the group of people who practiced almost every day and the group who practiced until they were completely exhausted. People who do both are most at risk of infertility.

Age is an important factor

In the first study it was shown that the same age under 30 but 24% of the exhausted (regardless of intensity and duration) group had fertility problems. Whereas the group that practiced almost every day (regardless of intensity and time), only 11% had this problem.

Scientists looked at factors such as body mass index, smoking, age, marital status and previous pregnancy ... They found that women who exercised almost every day were at risk. Muscle loss of fertility was 3.5 times higher than women who did not exercise.

Dr. Gudmundsdottir said: “When we compared the group of people who exercised to exhaustion with those with more moderate exercise, we found that the first group had a higher risk of fertility decline. 3 times".

In women with moderate or low levels of physical activity, researchers found no signs of impaired fertility.

Is exercising excessively making it difficult for a woman to get pregnant is just a transient effect?

Dr. Gudmundsdottir revealed an interesting thing: “The negative effects of intense hard training on fertility don't seem to be permanent. Most of the women participating in the study eventually had a baby. The hardest trainees of the mid-1980s were among the people with the most children in the 1990s. However, we don't know if they changed their activity levels in the mid-1980s. two investigations or not ”.

Build a reasonable exercise regimen

Scientists believe that intense physical activity consumes so much energy that the body actually has a short-term energy shortage. This can lead to a situation in which the body does not have enough energy to maintain all the workings of the endocrine mechanisms necessary for conception.

On the other hand, there is a previous study showing that maintaining a moderately active regimen improves hormone levels in a woman's body, compared with those who are inactive or overweight. This creates favorable conditions for female reproduction.

Dr. Gudmundsdottir also stressed that women who want to become pregnant should not give up all physical activity. While very high or very low levels of physical activity have both negative effects on fertility, moderate activity will bring many benefits.

So instead of strenuous physical activities such as cycling, jogging, swimming, aerobic, fitness ... you can walk, yoga or meditation ... Moderate exercise regime is not exercise. more than 5 hours / week, each training session does not last more than 1 hour. In addition, women who engage in special physical activity should pay attention to their menstrual cycle . Periods that are too long or if menstruation appear in a period of 2 - 3 months can become a red flag.

Why can too much exercise reduce pregnancy in women?

High intensity exercise makes it difficult for women to get pregnant

It has been suggested that exercising too much can reduce ovulation in women of normal weight. The cause could be due to:

Excessive exercise can cause luteal phase defects . The luteum phase is the time when ovulation can occur. This usually falls on the 12th to 16th day of the menstrual cycle. A shorter luteum phase can adversely affect a person's ability to conceive.

Low progesterone levels: Usually, progesterone levels remain high during the time ovulation is likely to occur. This helps eggs after fertilization can attach to the lining of the uterus more easily. High-intensity exercise that causes low progesterone levels can prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the lining of the uterus, preventing you from becoming pregnant.

Excessive physical exercise causes the hormones responsible for regulating the female reproductive system, GGGRR, LH, FSH and estradiol, to change in the direction of adversely affecting ovulation.

In people who exercise vigorously, there is a change in leptin levels, which regulate appetite and metabolism:

If the appetite is low, you may not be able to eat enough nutrients, causing your body to be nutritionally deficient, preventing ovulation from occurring frequently.

Women who exercise more than 7 hours a week to stay in shape tend to limit their food intake. The body does not have enough healthy fats, rapid weight loss or weight below the standard level ... all can become factors adversely affecting ovulation.

Therefore, if you want to exercise to improve your health and fertility, you should only exercise in moderation with a healthy diet.
